The planned campus buildings are clad in an ethereal whiteness that calls to mind the Minoru Yamasaki-designed McGregor Memorial conference center on the Wayne State University campus. The Ford structures have large windows, and the interiors will be naturally lit and configured for cooperation. The sophisticated new gas-fired heat-and-power plant, run by DTE and operated by only six people, reduces energy consumption, though critics have questioned its emissions. At the end of the work day at Ford, Camilo continued to explore an additional avenues of art & design. With the integration of Design principles and the ab- stractions of Fine Art, Camilo explores alternative design solutions. Design requires being on the ground with the people who will use and experience any new offerings from Ford, but it also means reaching across aisles and opening dialogues where previously deep, daily collaboration has been unheard of. He was an outsider, a relatively young designer (42) who'd gotten most of his hands-on design experience in California and Europe, not Detroit.
And it also has put California on the map as an important global design center. The studio has the capability of designing, engineering and fabricating fully running concept and prototype vehicles onsite. And it’s not something that’s normally open to the public, but because they threw an event, that’s how I got the opportunity to visit this design studio. Automotive design studios are where the gorgeous creations you and I see rolling down the road are initially conceived.

Having cross-functional teams from engineering, design, purchasing and more, has been a breakthrough, because they gain empathy and respect for each other’s practices and work together, rather than sitting in silos that tend to block each other’s effort. Many legacy businesses that have been operating decades or centuries find themselves with very established business models. But the consequence of entrenched models is that everything drives toward efficiencies and returns. It’s easy to say legacy companies need to change the lens through which they’re viewing and operating their business; it is everything to get it done well. Yet, despite all the talk of the global car, most manufacturers have come to the conclusion that what an American wants in Peoria is not the same as a the ideal car for a family in Bavaria or a housewife in Hiroshima.
